And then it was a little bit more BORING.

Then, the food lady reached into her bag of wonders and pulled out this!

I was very excited to see it!

The food lady told me to say please.

So I said “puhweeeeeeeze!” the only way I know how.

Then, I got the fishy and I went to town on it.

After 30 minutes, the fishy looked like this!

The food lady said we should give the fishy a break, so we went on a walk.

When we got back, she did not give me the fishy again. She took it out and she was going to give it to me, but then I jumped on her and acted all crazy. I am not allowed to behave that way so she put the fish away. Now, I’m back to being BORED. I wish I had remembered my manners, but sometimes it is hard to be good when there are fishes to be had!

Ten Months Old

Buzz turned 10 months old on Saturday. He seems to be full grown (around 55 pounds) and he's really started to have a more mature personality. He's still super-friendly and nice to people, but has started to accept that he doesn't get to greet and cuddle every person. He seems to have fully accepted my leadership and no longer jumps on me or second-guesses me on important commands like "quiet." His recall is not 100% and he is slow to complete some commands, but it is all very workable. Buzz's house manners are almost 100% in place! He's been housebroken for several months, but he seems to have really internalized rules about what he is and isn't allowed to chew on, dig at, pull over, and sit on.
This month, Buzz started to show his disapproval for puppies. He was mean to several puppies at the park. So, for now, Buzz is not allowed to play at the park. I'm hoping that puppy-hating is a stage he'll get over and we'll be able to go to the park again in a few months. In the meantime, I'm going to put up a 25-foot stretch of fence in the yard so that the yard will be completely fenced and Buzz can have off-leash time at home and we can do some fun training in the yard.

On a funnier note: Buzz has learned that getting in the bath is a way to earn treats and has started to spontaneously offer this behavior.

9 months old

Buzz is a big boy in more ways than one! He's getting older, taller, longer, wider & more mature. As his trainer says "There is nothing dainty about that dog!" LOL. I think she comparing him to the other border collie we have class with--a spindley little thing. Compared to your average Lab, he's dainty as all get out!

Here he is practicing "leave it"...what a good boy!

Weeks 13 through 16

The drive back to Ann Arbor went smoothly, especially considering I had my cat in his carrier on the passenger seat and a puppy in his carrier in the backseat! Both rode calmly and quietly the entire 11 hours. The trip took longer than usual as we stopped in to see Grandma on our way out. Mary and Elli drove up to Grandma’s for lunch and said hello to Chai and Buzz.

During weeks 13 through 16, Buzz proved himself to be a smarty—learning sit and down quickly and reliably coming when called within a few days. He made great progress on housetraining, peeing in the house perhaps once every 10 days. Buzz started sleeping up to 9 hours a night…wonderful.

Early on Buzz was a bit shy of going for walks, but as he got a little bit older his hesitancy dissipated, and we started being able to burn his energy in more appropriate ways than attacking the futon. Walking though the neighborhood earned Buzz quite a fan base among the young kids. It isn’t unusual to be walking along with him and have little kids come streaming out of their houses saying, “Buzz! Buzz!” Maybe Buzz is the pied piper, reincarnated; it feels that way at times. Buzz is very good with kids…seems to understand what they are and how much fun they can be.

Chai/Buzz relations were fairly uneventful at this time. Buzz stayed mostly in the living room and kitchen, which were gated off. Chai stayed mostly in the bedroom. The two could see each other and sometimes Chai would jump the gate to visit the dog. Biggest hurdle to them getting along peacefully was Buzz’s eagerness to play with Chai—which was of course signaled by bouncing around and barking at the cat…ugh.

Once he had enough vaccinations, I started taking Buzz hiking in the woods. Boy, did he love it! I quickly discovered that he could be trusted off leash, so once we’re in the park, Buzz is let loose to chase squirrels and greet other dogs. He always stays within 100 yards or so, comes when called, and “checks in” with me as we hike along, What a good boy!
